10 Decembrie 2009

Oracle OpenWorld, one of the biggest events in the ITC industry (over 40,000 participants) revealed predominantly the business opportunities arising from the aquisition of SunMicrosistems by Oracle. Thus, the main topics were Exadata, the first ”database machine”, produced by Oracle and by the felling of record performance for transactional databases.

The event began with a common presentation given by Larry Elison, CEO of Oracle and Scott McNealy, former CEO SunMicrosystems. The emphasis was on Sun's entry into the Oracle portfolio and on the opportunities arising from this acquisition. Larry Elison was keen to point out that Oracle will continue investing in Sun products: Java technology, SPARC processors and the MySQL database, combating the rumors waiving certain technologies and products, especially hardware. The main announcement was to set a new record of performance according to the standards for TPC-C Oracle Database 11g on a Sun SPARC server with Solaris operating system.

The system was thus faster than any similar product of the competition, Ellison insisting on IBM products, to which Oracle-Sun system has achieved a response 16 times lower. Performance is more valuable also by using by the Oracle-Sun tandem, a hardware sized eight times smaller and having a consume four times lower than the competing products. Simultaneously, Larry Elison launched a challenge to the users, pledging U.S. $ 10 million prize to the companies that will migrate to the Exadata system and will not get at least a doubling in performance over the best system that they use routinely.

Exadata, star at Oracle OpenWorld 2009
Exadata, first, ”database machine”, available on the market is the undeniable star of the event, being one of the most common topics. This is the second version of the product, developed together with Sun, the first one being in partnership with HP. Oracle Exadata Storage Server combines databases and the storage applications from Oracle with Sun hardware, optimized to achieve top performances. The main advantage of the product is exceeding the limits of the traditional storage systems. Oracle System uses an architecture and a new technology (SUN flash fare) enabling a much higher storage speed and an increase of the scalability and the reliability. Another star present at the event was Arnold Schwarzenegger, invited as Governor of California, who spoke about the impact of the IT industry on the modern society and about the need for green technologies.

CRM products improvements
In the same context, Oracle has made several improvements to the CRM products. Moreover, the CRM subject has been widely debated in the event, both by Oracle and the partners such as CRMantra, SalesForce.com or Salesgenie. At the product level the news consists of launching the 2.0 version of Oracle Mobile Assistant for Blackberry and of the version 3 of the add-on Oracle Social CRM Applications with features oriented to the on demand solutions. The sales optimization solution for BlackBerry is now available in 12 languages, which makes it attractive for very many countries and it is oriented toward the collaboration between the mobile sales force, the offline access to information and increased functionalities of contact management. A more complex approach is in terms of Oracle Social CRM, the integration the CRM solutions of some features that allow the interaction between the companies and the customers through communication channels such as the social networking type: Facebook, LinkedIn, Hi5, etc.. The new functionalities brought to the CRM Oracle solutions enable companies to monitor the customers in the online communities in which they operate and generate as a response. Other features launched are: Oracle CRM Sales Campaigns On Demand, CRM Sales Library On Demand, CRM Sales Campaigns On Demand

In 2010, the official launch of Fusion Applications
According to Larry Ellison the much-awaited Fusion Applications suite will be commercially available by early next year. Ellison said that the development of this new generation of products was made possible by annual investment exceeding $ 3 billion in the research and development. Fusion Applications is a suite of applications developed on Fusion Middleware, the only fully standardized middleware existing in the industry and based on Java, said Ellison. Another particular aspect is the orientation towards the Fusion Business Intelligence Applications, both as integrated functionalities in each application, for not to be needed further purchases and as the interface at the user level. PeopleSoft, JDEdwards, eBusiness Suite are old applications developed on another mentality, unlike them, Fusion Applications will enable an assembly at the business processes level of all the components, Ellison added.

SOA is another component that was the basis for Fusion Application development and therefore the components are rearranged and reusable Fusion Applications will include both traditional funtionalitati of Oracle applications (eBusiness Suite, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards) or other custom systems as well as new functionality such as TalentManagement, Distributor Order Management, Sales Compensation, Teritory management.

Complementary, Oracle launched a new customer support system, MyOracle Support unifying and migrating all existing services towards clound computing. According to Larry Ellison, Oracle has begun already the development of a global database containing all existing configurations at the customers with detailed information about hardware and applications (operating systems, managemnent, access, database versions etc.). The aim is to monitor and identify all the problems and solutions identified for a given configuration and to provide proactively the best solution for all existing customers.

Changes in the partnership system
„Oracle PartnerNetwork Specialized“ is the name of the new Oracle Certification Program, which will include four levels of certification of partners, on the level of the solutions and expertise for industry verticals, to enable the end customers to more quickly identify the appropriate interlocutor. From December 1st, all Oracle partners will have to subscribe to one of these levels. The new system OPN Specialized complements the previous system of ranking of the partners.

News in EMEA region
EMEA region generates revenues of USD 7.9 billion representing over one third of the global Oracle’s revenues. The evolution of last year was more than expected, but not all the countries have yet enetered the path of recovery, among them being also Romania. „The impact was greater in the Eastern Europe, where recovery is more difficult after the high growth rates in the recent years. The investments in these countries were higher and that is why the expectations have been far. We can rather speek about a return at the industry level than at the country level. Telecommunications recover faster than the financial sector for example. Producing companies, were the most hit by the crisis, more than those service-oriented, says Loic le Guisquet, executive vice-president, Oracle EMEA. A very important aspect is the interest, which Oracle observed to be for the Oracle Case Management (Citizen Relations Management) systems in public administration in Europe in particular, for high quality of the public services. Therefore, within the company will be developed a number of specialized skills in this direction. This interest is generated both by the maturity of the organizations involved in public service and citizen pressure (Western Europe) but also by the pressures put by the regulations and legislation for the Eastern European countries. Related to the assimilation of Primavera, a company bought by Oracle in December last year, Loic Le Guisquet said that for the next period, Primavera will operate as a separate entity, without major changes in the partners and distribution system. In that period will be identified the best way to integrate Primavera project management solutions in the Oracle portfolio.
