How important is for Infineon the educational dimension, the investment in training of professionals, providing leadership for the Romanian higher education?

Education is part of our system and we have developed over the years our own academy Infineon Academy where employees all over the world can enlist and participate to a variety of courses in the range of hundred and more. We have also invested a lot in the design software for our engineers. The cost of one software package for a design engineer is above of 100 K Euro and we have today more than 200 engineers on board. Beside this we are also investing local every year a lot in training and education of our people, moreover in the future this budget will be increased due to our new hirings we are heading in the short term perspective and also due to our keen interest in developing people competences.

Thanks to Infineon the Romanian research in general and especially electronics will be in 3 years in the spotlight of Europe. You have recently succeeded in obtaining the organizing of the European Conference of Semiconductors in 2013 in Bucharest. How did you make such a success possible? What do you think that will be for Romania the main benefits resulting from organizing this international event?

Indeed to host this conference is a big honor for Romania. You need to apply for this conference three to four years in advance and you need to convince the supervisory board of the conference which consists of senior experts and managers of the major European semiconductor companies and well known universities to be a reliable partner. Therefore I had set up a strong consortium consisting of the Polytehnica Bucharest, the Gheorghe Asachi University from Iassy and the Institute for Microelectronics from Bucharest to apply for the conference. In addition we are able to convince also well known Romanian experts working abroad to join our consortium.

The main benefits for Romania will be that major decision makers of the semiconductor industry will visit Romania and will recognize that there is already a significant potential for R&D activities. This could be a trigger point to increase further semiconductor activities in Romania.

In the future, what role you propose for Infineon to play in Romania for the electronics industry and the Romanian higher education system?

Most definitively Infineon will play a key role in defining the right frame for setting up an embedded system which includes industry, education and political system. We will continue to develop talented students which have the potential to grow inside Infineon and to make a successful technical or management career. With regards of electronic industry I think that Romania has a lot of potential, still not proper valued but things are going to be changed soon and Infineon will continue to keep a leading role here.
